Palermo Page Two

This is Massimo Russo, a very kind young man we met on the train. He is showing us his new bed n breakfast in Palermo. He also took us for a walking tour of part of Old Palermo and had  2 of his friends take us in a car to find the town of Marlene's ancestors, MezzoMorreale. His B’nB is a link on our Home Page.
Here is Massimo showing us the Farmer’s Market in down-town Palermo ! I am holding up my favorite, melanzzana—which is eggplant. This was part of the 5 miles we walked that day.
Palermo Cathedral! Towers on left end have a road thru them! Santuary in center is at least one block long and the right side shows the Arab influences in design. . Palermo is the sight of the battling Cathedrals, 2 built in the 12th century. This one, built by the Archbishop Walter to compete with William II the king, who built Monreale Cathedral east of the city and up the hill.
One day we took a bus ride up Mt. Pellegrino to see the Shrine of one of the patron saints of Palermo “Santa Rosalia”. The vistas(views of Palermo below) on the bus were the best part ! Marlene’s great-grandmother from Sicily was named Rosalia. It was a church attached to the rock where the shrine is inside (dentro).
